Who hasn’t ever wanted to find a treasure map and seek out a lost treasure? Well, Geocaching is a great way to use your GPS device and find a “hidden” cache of fun. Here’s how it works: In a waterproof container, items such as a logbook or local random loose items are left in an out of the way place. Next, the person who leaves this ‘cache’ posts the coordinates on the internet.

Here comes the fun part: Program your GPS device with the latitude and longitude from the website and your GPS creates a route to find the box. Usually there’s hiking involved, but you can see how far you have to go before you leave anyway! When you find your treasure, you can leave a note in the logbook, add an item, or take a picture of yourself at the location.

Now, you can’t take the ‘treasure’ with you, but you can take the adventure to different locations. There’s plenty of websites that have lists and lists of the places (and difficulty levels) of geocaches near where you live. So if your GPS device only stays in your car, and you’ve been looking for other ways to use it, try making a day of it and search for some ‘lost’ treasure!

Games like this are so cool and make for great family fun! Another GPS based game network is MScapes: http://www.hp.com/idealab/us/en/mediascapes.html. On MScapes (short for media scapes) people can create and share games and tours. It’s so fun and FREE. Happy hunting!

You can take a bit of treasure with you and/or leave something behind in the ‘treasure chest’. Some caches are micro and some are very large so it depends on what the creator decided to do. It is great fun and caches can be found all over the world.
