Bridging the Geek Gap: Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii, Wii 7 Comments » By John

Nintendo Wii
Nintendo has always ‘nin-tended’ to bring people together for fun and games, and their newest console the Wii has certainly done that. You haven’t heard too much of the ground breaking new graphics and game titles, but what you have heard is the great stories of the ‘controller that you swing around’ and ‘they’re using the Wii in nursing homes to keep seniors active’. This is the success of the Wii. How about those commercials? Watch a Wii commercial to the very end and you will see the two “i’s” do this slight ‘Japanese bow’ towards you, and you begin to realize: the Wii is pronounced that way so that “We” all play together!

So your friend says, “C’mon over and let’s play Wii.” You take turns at bowling, tennis, golf and other great games, all through the motion sensing controller (you might want to check out the sports kit). Or maybe you want to just chill and play Sims 2 for a while.

Be sure to put that wrist strap on because you don’t want it to go flying!

Early on, you realize that your friend has been able to make a character on screen that even ‘resembles’ them! There is a reason the Wii is successful: Nintendo realizes that it’s not about pleasing the third party developers, but bringing people together. These are video games: emphasis on the ‘games’. It’s as if Nintendo the company is now ‘bowing’ to YOU the customer, doing what it takes to reel in the young, the teens, the older, and even senior citizens.

The best part is, you can plug in a Wii and get started right away. What Nintendo is doing is bringing back the simplicity of turning on a video game console, and having fun. And if that doesn’t take you back, how about downloading old-school Nintendo games online! Add to the mix all the Guitar Hero craze, and you’ve got something for everyone. The Wii is -interestingly enough- bringing people together and putting them against each other (on the tennis court!) all at the same time.
